Great tools for competitor analysis

Crimson Sunbird works with clients to understand how they can improve their online and mobile business.  One big set of insights comes from looking at what their competitors are doing and to help us with that we use a range of online software tools.

Piecing together a picture of what your competitors are doing is a bit of detective exercise and we need different tools for different aspects of competitor behaviour.  Here are 3 of our favourites:

1. Site Traffic:

A relative newcomer but great at providing a snapshot for reasonably well trafficked sites.  Allows you to compare competitors to see how many people they are reaching and how effective their sites are at engaging visitors and customers. The service works by sampling the online behaviour of a large “panel” of users via a browser plugin. A paid premium service is coming soon.

2. Social Activity:

A powerful set of social media insights even in the free version showing the growth in friends/likes and statistics for individual countries for a brand.  Plenty of articles and statistics too help build a picture of different sectors and industries. This site draws data from the official APIs.

3. Advertising Activity:

Although not 100% accurate Spyfu is a great tool to estimate whether a brand is making use of PPC (pay-per-click) advertising and which other brands it is competing with.

We’ll feature more tools here regularly and if you’d like to suggest some we’d love to hear about them.

If you want us to analyse how you are doing in your digital efforts then get in touch.
